It is a good start to the New Year for South Dakotans who work for minimum wage.
The minimum wage per hour for tipped employees rises to $5.44.
For the rest of the state, including upstate counties, the new minimum wage will be $11.10 an hour, an increase of 70 cents.
Workers at small businesses in NY will receive $1.50 an hour minimum wage hike, from $12 to $13.50.

All told, come December 31 or January 1, 20 states and 23 localities nationwide will hike the minimum wage. The minimum wage for the remainder of NY will rise to $12.50 at the end of 2020.
In another six states - Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Missouri and Washington - voters took matters into their own hands, approving measures at the ballot box to raise the minimum wage, according to the nonprofit. Under federal law and many state laws, these workers can be paid less than the legal minimum wage on the assumption that they receive a substantial part of their income in the form of tips.
Economic studies on minimum wage increases have shown that some workers do benefit, while others might see their work hours reduced.
The $15 minimum wage will be in effect for New York City fast-food workers, too. That's because 19 states and 24 municipalities across the country are increasing the minimum wage starting tomorrow and one state, New York, increases them starting today. Few are there yet, but many states have ratcheted up wages through phased-in laws and adjustments for inflation.
"I think the weight of the evidence to date suggests the employment effects from minimum-wage increases in the US have been pretty small, much smaller than the wage increases", he said. Businesses may place a higher value on experienced workers, making it more challenging for entry-level employees to find jobs.
