But, double-bogeys on the par-four fourth and 14th holes and a bogey on the par-five 18th hole tarnished his scorecard, though Rose still ended the day in pole position.
His 10th victory on the PGA Tour is one more than compatriot Nick Faldo, whose nine wins included six major titles.
That's how good Rose was, and if the victory doesn't rank up there with him capturing the 2013 U.S. Open or the Olympic gold medal in the 2016 Summer Games, it will be cherished for the company he kept and the track on which he excelled.
Tiger Woods, playing his first tournament of the year, shot a final round 67 to finish in a five-way tie for 20th at 10 under. "It felt like I had to work hard for his". Day shot 67, McIlroy had 69, while Rahm closed with a 72.
Rose, understandably, had to fight through a bit of a golf hangover following that, and Foley has said there were times Rose simply was not ready to get after it again. "But you had to do it. Adam Scott got right there, and I played some great golf coming down the stretch".
'It's a whole new look for me, but I don't mind it if it's going to produce this golf.
Rose has made hit one bogey over two days and at 15-under 129 tied the 36-hole tournament record, last matched by Tom Lehman in 2005.
Rose struggled to open his round, bogeying three of his first five holes.
"In the past I might have got a little rattled, a little shaken by that start but I didn't today".

But he delivered big birdie putts on No. 7 and No. 10, short-game shots that took stress of his putter on consecutive holes on the back nine.
Rose wasn't initially sure if he was going to play with the Honma driver, but has put the Tour World TW747 in to play for his first two events of the year, complete with Honma Vizard FD-7X shaft.
Defending champion Jason Day is in a six-way tie for 16th place after posting a three-under-par 69. He dropped his only shot of the day at the 12th but bounced back with a birdie from eight feet at the long 13th.
Another tiny victory: It was the first time since 2008 that Woods broke par all four rounds at Torrey Pines.
"Well it was nice to shake off some rust", the 14-time major victor said.

Playing in the last group alongside Scott, Rose posted 21-under to win like the best player in the world.
"Finishing the year the way I did, hitting it like I did was great because I finally built it to a place where I can take a little time off and I know what I'll have when I come back", Woods said.
