Statewide in Washington, orders for measles vaccine jumped about 30 percent in January compared with the same month previous year, climbing from 12,140 doses to 15,780 doses, figures showed.
Europe is not the only country impacted by a spike in measles cases.
Since Jan. 1, 50 cases of measles have been confirmed in Clark County, with 11 more cases suspected, officials said.
There were 72 recorded deaths from measles across Europe in 2018 and 82,596 people contracted the disease.
That helps explain why public health officials get so concerned when outbreaks occur, which they have been with increasing frequency in recent years.
"We heard rumblings of a measles outbreak in the capital between December and January and I just knew we were going to get hit", Lon Kightlinger, a former South Dakota state epidemiologist and regular Peace Corp volunteer in Madagascar, tells CNN.

The European Vaccine Action Plan 2015-2020 (EVAP) lays out a strategy endorsed by all 53 Member States to eliminate both measles and rubella.
Gaps in vaccination coverage, complacency about the disease and a resistance by some parents to have their children immunised has been blamed for the concerning rise in infections.
In many countries, anti-vaccine campaigners seek to dissuade parents from getting their children immunised, despite strong scientific evidence that vaccines are safe and effective.
In Italy, the co-ruling anti-establishment Five Star Movement has questioned the safety of some vaccines and loudly denounced efforts to make vaccinations mandatory.
Ukraine reported the highest number of measles cases a year ago across Europe, while more than 90% of cases were in 10 countries, including France, Italy and Greece.
In 34 of these countries, estimated coverage with a second dose of measles vaccine was below 95 perc ent.
WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr. Zsuzsanna Jakab said that "exceptionally high immunization coverage" across the continent belied significant gaps at local level.
