The mission began in the Eagle crater, and after studying nearby craters, the scientists made a decision to take a long journey to the much larger Endeavour crater.
Its passing leaves a legacy that other NASA automated missions will be hard-pressed to match. The last attempt was made on Tuesday night.
Its final eerie photo was taken on 10 June as it became engulfed in the sand storm and its camera was shrouded in static.
"These rovers have transformed the way humanity looks at Mars", said Steve Squyres of Cornell University, the scientific principal investigator of Spirit and Opportunity's Mars Exploration Rover (MER) mission.
The experience inspired her to pursue a career at JPL; Fraeman is now a deputy project scientist on the Mars exploration rover project, and works with Opportunity nearly daily. Spirit put 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometers) on its odometer before falling silent in the spring of 2010 - six years after its warranty expired.
We have a tendency to get attached to the spacecraft we send out, not because we care so much about the hardware itself but because they represent large teams of hard-working individuals pushing human knowledge to places it's never been before. Rolling along until communication ceased last June, Opportunity roamed a record 28 miles around Mars and worked longer than any other lander. This meant that Opportunity had achieved the longest "drive" off planet in history.More news: Insect decline ‘catastrophic’ for planet

Thomas Zurbuchen, head of NASA's science missions, broke the news to the Opportunity team at what amounted to a wake at the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, announcing the demise of "our beloved Opportunity".
Mars 2020 project system engineer Jennifer Trosper, left, points to a replica of the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity on 13/2/19. Only a few minutes at the end of the hour-long event was devoted to media questions. However, the massive global dust storm on Mars in mid-2018 silenced the rover forever. Despite their best efforts, engineers were unable to revive the rover which was incapacitated by a huge dust storm covering the planet a year ago.
In a Tweet, the space agency said, 'Rest well, rover. They rocketed from Cape Canaveral a month apart in 2003. Opportunity was created to explore and take pictures of Mars' Gale crater - thought to once have been a giant lake - and look for signs the planet once held life.
Despite more than 600 attempts to make contact since then, a dedicated team of scientists and engineers will officially call time on Oppy's mission on Wednesday night. NASA wanted this rover and its identical twin named Spirit to last 90 days.
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said, 'It is because of trailblazing missions such as Opportunity that there will come a day when our courageous astronauts walk on the surface of Mars.
The records, discoveries and sheer tenacity of this intrepid little rover is testament to the ingenuity, dedication, and perseverance of the people who built and guided her.
The second problem is that Curiosity is an explorer, not a fix bot.
