"Huawei, never backwards in coming forwards, is throwing its own hat into the ring with the launch of the Mate X, the world's first foldable 5G phone", he said. My overriding concern about foldables is that they'll fail to be perfectly flat when actually opened up, but the Mate X again stands up to scrutiny.
What is remarkable about the Mate X's design is just how thin Huawei has managed to make it: The unfolded parts of the phone come in at a mere 5.4mm which is thinner than nearly any other phone today, and also much thinner than what Samsung was able to achieve in the Galaxy Fold.
The Mate X was said to be 11millimetres thick when folded. The device has what the company is calling a "Falcon Wing Mechanical Hinge".
The Huawei Mate X has an 8-inch OLED display when unfolded, with a 2480 x 2200 resolution. Instead, one side of the phone has a curving grip that the screen nestles back into. The opposite side features a "spine" going along its side that looks a lot like the chin on the old Motorola Razr V3.
When unfolded, the Mate X is 5.4 mm thick - thinner than the Apple iPad Pro 2018, and when folded, it is just 11 mm thick.
The battery in the Huawei Mate X sits at 4,500mAh and the company says it has AI power saving technology built-in.More news: Saudi Crown Prince’s visit

The 8in main tablet display is practically bezel-less where the Fold has a large camera notch cut-out. Of course the speeds you'd get are wholly dependant on your network. When folded, you can use the 6.6-inch front display and on the back you will have 6.38-inch display. Closed, the rear comes in at 2480 x 892, while the front is slightly denser at 2480 x 1148 pixels. It looks pin sharp, running the same Android 9 Pie with EMUI 9 that you'd find on the Mate 20 Pro.
What does this mean in real life? A 1GB film can be downloaded in three seconds.
Arguably even more impressive is the new 55W Supercharge charger.
Huawei has confirmed to Metro.co.uk that it will not be selling the Mate X folding phone in the United States. How about battery life? It goes on and on.
The world's second-largest smartphone manufacturer believes the Mate X is two things the Galaxy Fold isn't: the future of design and the future of technology.
The much-anticipated handset, officially called the Huawei Mate X, was announced days after a similar reveal from rival tech giant Samsung. "It is the most sophisticated hinge in the world", Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group said on stage this morning.
