Ellis had been consistently hostile to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team throughout the case, even as he repeatedly found that the prosecutors' legal arguments had merit. He was among the first of 34 individuals and a number of corporations to be indicted in the probe. In a short remarks to Judge T.S. Ellis III, Manafort asked for compassion.
During Manafort's trial, much of the damaging testimony against him was provided by his former deputy Rick Gates, who is awaiting sentencing after reaching a plea agreement with the Special Counsel's office.
Manafort will receive a second sentence next week from a different federal judge for the two crimes he pleaded guilty to a year ago, witness tampering and conspiracy related to his illegal Ukrainian lobbying and money laundering.
Paul Manafort was convicted by a Virginia jury in August of five counts of filing false income tax returns, two counts of bank fraud and one count of failing to report a foreign bank account. The charges stem from Manafort's lobbying and consulting work - and the millions of dollars he made from it - in Ukraine.
Donald Trump's presidential campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been jailed for almost four years.
The judge has used hearings in Manafort's case previously to inject politics into the proceedings.
Two months later, the special counsel's office accused Manafort of violating this plea deal by "lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Special Counsel's Office on a variety of subject matters".
Judge Ellis came to this conclusion even as he recognized that Manafort "did not express regret".
What did the defense say?"I hope you will reflect on that". They also said Manafort owes the U.S. Treasury over $6 million in taxes.
But the judge also rejected Manafort's attorneys claims that the lack of any such evidence undermined the case, saying he had considered that issue at the beginning of the case.
Poorly redacted court filings show that Manafort and Kilimnik discussed polling data related to Trump's campaign, raising the possibility that they may have served as a conduit between Trump and the Kremlin.
That meeting at Trump Tower has become the centrepiece of the Special Counsel's investigation into the campaign's alleged collusion with Russian Federation.
The memo pushed back against any assertion that Manafort's cooperation should reduce his sentence, contending that "consideration of his lies to the government and grand jury are aggravating factors and an additional basis for the denial of any reduction for acceptance of responsibility". Mueller's office will deliver a sentencing recommendation to Judge Amy Berman Jackson for these charges by Friday.
