Plenty has been made of the fact that Tesla is tackling a huge potential market with the Model Y. Crossovers and small SUVs are big business right now, and Elon Musk & Co. are fully aware that the demand for a more affordable auto than the Model X - but with similar SUV-esque styling cues - is considerable. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made plenty of lofty promises about the potential of these cameras, ultrasonic sensors, radar, and specialized computer, but there's still much to be delivered on that front.
Musk also suggested that driving a Model Y on Mars in ten years was not out of the question.

Tesla is hoping there will pent-up demand for the Model Y, almost four years after Musk first began touting the company's plans to make an SUV. Even with the reduced range, Tesla is predicting demand to be perhaps 50 percent higher for the Model Y than the Model 3 owing to the former's crossover body style.
