McKee, a journalist whose work has been published in magazines and newspapers both in Northern Ireland and overseas, was writing a book on the disappearance of young people during the three decades of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, which ended with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement peace deal.
"Lyra is not just another dead journalist, another worker murdered at work - she was a child when the peace accord was signed. Sympathy to her partner, family and many friends".
The Belfast woman was shot dead during rioting in Londonderry on Thursday night. McKee doggedly pursued a line that at least one of the IRA figures associated with the murder plot may have been a Special Branch informer at the time of the Bradford assassination.
