The province says the blaze is burning about 25 kilometres southwest of High Level, and was expected to grow Sunday due to strong wind gusts from the southeast.
Almost 5,000 people have cleared out of High Level and nearby reserves with flames licking at the southern edge of the community.
While no formal evacuation orders have been issued as of yet, residents of High Level are being asked to prepare to evacuate at a moment's notice.
The community of Bushe River was also forced to evacuate, as ordered by Chief and Council of the Dene Tha First Nation.
"We're excited to pay it forward a little bit", he said.
Nearly 90 firefighters were working on the edge of the fire closest to High Level, keeping the flames away from the town.

The province said there are no evacuation orders from those fires.
Fire danger in that part of the province, along with parts of neighbouring Saskatchewan, is considered extreme or very high with seven "out of control" fires now burning in the area.
An out-of-control wildfire in northern Alberta has prompted authorities to close a highway and issue a warning that electricity may be cut to people in High Level.
It is hot, dry and windy in northern Alberta right now and officials expect the fire danger to increase.
He also noted that over 4,000 people had so far been evacuated, with no homes yet damaged or any injuries reported.
"People are of course afraid because they remember the wildfires of Fort McMurray, but we talked to a lot of the residents and reaffirmed that we are being proactive", High Level Mayor Crystal McAteer said in the conference call with reporters.
Most of northern Alberta is under a fire ban, fire permits are now suspended in the impacted areas, and an off-highway vehicle restriction is also in effect.
